Pronghorns women's basketball overcomes slow start to rout Lake Region State College 69-43
The lights, crowd and overall atmosphere in the official return of Gillette College basketball might've been a bit overwhelming for Gillette College's women's basketball team through the first quarter.
The lights, crowd and overall atmosphere in the official return of Gillette College basketball might've been a bit overwhelming for Gillette College's women's basketball team through the first quarter.
The Pronghorns started tight, missed shots and turned the ball over.
"We came out a little tight," coach Liz Lewis said. "Every timeout I had to tell them, 'Breathe.'"
Nesbit finished the game with 11 free throws on 17 attempts. She was a force on both ends down low, starting the game with an early block and consistently getting foul calls her way that started some momentum rolling for the offense.
"It's consistency: We can count on Dasani to give us her all every single night," Lewis said. "She's one that's very consistent. She started with a block — that looked like volleyball to me — she did an excellent job bringing the intensity. Very proud of her effort tonight."
Nesbit, along with some timely 3-pointers from Alyssa Beckford and Abby Leahy allowed Gillette to outscore Lake Region 24-13 in the second quarter.
The third quarter was low scoring for both teams, as the combined score was 15, with the Pronghorns accounting for 9 of them.
While the Royals couldn't pull their offense together, the Pronghorns came out firing in the final 10 minutes.
Nesbit started the quarter with a 3, which Beckford followed up with another 3 and a layup. Leahy added another 3-pointer and so did Nesbit.
Beckford and Nesbit both finished with 19 points. Nesbit had 14 rebounds, which led the team, as well as a steal and three assists. Leahy scored 11 points with two 3-pointers and seven rebounds.
The team as a whole finished shooting almost 29% from beyond the arc, which was a steep improvement from the start of the game. Qaizden Stephano, who leads the team in points per game was limited to 19 minutes per game as she dealt with foul trouble.
"It's exciting," Lewis said. "We got the win, played well, but there's still a lot of improvement. That's the exciting part."
The Pronghorns will play the University of Jamestown JV on Saturday at 2 p.m.
