Gillette College Men's Soccer Earns First Win of the Season in a 4-1 Victory Over Central Wyoming
Gillette College's men's soccer team defeated Central Wyoming College 4-1 on Saturday during Labor Day Weekend in an electrifying match that showcased their offensive prowess and team cohesion. The game, held at the Pronghorns' home field, was highlighted by a standout performance from Tomas Mejia, who scored a sensational hat trick, and a decisive goal from Julen Arteaga.
From the opening whistle, it was clear that Gillette College was eager to make a statement. The Pronghorns' aggressive approach paid off early in the match, with Mejia setting the tone. His first goal came in the 8th minute assisted by George Frost, where he deftly maneuvered through Central Wyoming's defense and finished with a clinical strike that left the goalkeeper with no chance.
The home crowd barely had time to catch their breath before Mejia struck again. This time, he took advantage of a well-placed pass from midfielder George Frost, beating the defender and slotting the ball neatly into the back of the net off a hader. His second goal in the 14th minute demonstrated not only his scoring ability but also his knack for being in the right place at the right time.
Central Wyoming College managed to pull one back in the 65th minute, injecting a brief period of tension into the game. However, Gillette College quickly regained control. Mejia completed his hat trick with a superb third goal in the 71 minute. After a clever combination play and a perfectly timed through ball from Julen Arteaga, Mejia's finish was both powerful and precise, sealing his place as the standout performer of the match.
As if Mejia's brilliance wasn't enough, Julen Arteaga added the finishing touch to Gillette College's dominant performance. Arteaga's goal came in the 65th minute, a well-struck shot from outside the penalty area that sailed past the outstretched arms of Central Wyoming's keeper and into the net. This goal not only underscored Arteaga's skill but also highlighted the team's strong attacking depth.
The final whistle blew with Gillette College securing a comfortable 4-1 victory. The win is not just a promising start to the season but also a testament to the team's hard work and preparation. The Pronghorns demonstrated excellent teamwork, strategic play, and individual brilliance, all of which will be crucial as they continue their campaign.
Coach Alex Machin, who led the team through a rigorous pre-season, praised his players' performance. "Tomas was exceptional today, and Julen's goal was the cherry on top of a well-executed game plan," Machin said. "It's a great way to start the season, and we're looking forward to building on this momentum."
